When I try to encode an AVI file into MPEG, I get an error stating that the CODEC is missing or cannot be found. What is wrong?

Two possible scenarios:

1. You are missing the CODEC (compressor/decompressor) that the AVI file is encoded with. You can test this by attempting to playback the file through Media Player. If Media Player gives you a similar message, then you will need to obtain the CODEC that was used to compress the file before you can convert it to MPEG.

2. If the clip does play in Media Player, then the clip is most likely an AVI Type 2 file. MPEG Maker-2 currently only supports AVI Type 1 files. To avoid this, choose an UNCOMPRESSED format or a standard AVI-1 CODEC when capturing your original AVI.

2003-12-16 | DVD Toolbox
What is the encoding time for AVI to MPEG conversion?

This depends greatly on the computer speed, AVI source file and MPEG compression settings. When keeping the MPEG file the original resolution size of the AVI file, encoding time averages between a 10:1 and 20:1 time ratio. To optimize the transcoding speed you can also try to read the source file and write the target file on separate hard drives.

2003-12-16 | DVD Toolbox
Where can I find the serial number and password required by the installation?

These numbers are located, in the case of the retail version, on the inside of the "clamshell" box that DVD TOOLBOX shipped in, or in the case of a DCM or Profiler bundle, on the back of the manual.

2003-12-16 | DVD Toolbox
What operating systems are supported?

Windows 95, 98 NT, ME and 2000 are supported by all software modules except the software DVD player, which is supported under Windows 98 only.

2003-12-16 | DVD Toolbox
Can I burn a DVD-Video disc with this package that will be playable on my set top consumer DVD Player?

A DVD-Video disc has three basic requirements to be compatible with this type of player.

1. A "VOB" data structure
2. The format of the final disc must be UDF (Universal Disc Format)
3. The physical disc must be compatible with consumer DVD Players.

DVD TOOLBOX handles the first requirement only. The second requirement is handled by the disc burning software used to create the actual disc (third party). For the third requirement, there is only one mainstream compatible format, DVD-R by Pioneer that is widely compatible with consumer set top DVD Players. Although there are exceptions with some DVD players, as a general guide, any other type of disc (CD-R, CD-RW, DVD-RAM, etc.) will not allow playback in this manner. PLEASE NOTE: Version 1.1 of DVD Maker (only available in DVD TOOLBOX v2.0) allows to generate UDF images that are fully compatible with Crosswriter, the DVD burning software utility supplied by Pionner with its DVR-S201 drives for version of 1.9 DVD-R media. Compatibility with version 2.0 of the DVD-R/DVD-RW specification is under validation.

When I try to decode a VOB file with VOBToMPEG, I get an error. What is wrong?

VOBToMPEG is designed to decode the VOBs from our software. It will decode many other VOBs from other sources, but this is not 100% guaranteed. Also, VOBToMPEG will not decode CSS Encrypted VOBs.

What operating systems are supported ?

Version 2.1 of the MPEGProfiler capture software supports Windows NT 4.0 (Service Pack 5 or higher). The next release, due out in June 2001, will support Windows 2000 as well.
Version 2.6 of MPEGProfiler now Supports Windows NT, 2000 and XP

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
What kind of quality can I expect from the MPEGProfiler?

Quality greatly depends on the source footage, input type and compression settings. For some generic samples of the optimal quality, check the SAMPLES page in the DOWNLOADS section.

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
Does MPEG-1 capture on the Profiler support VBR (Variable Bit Rate)?

No. VBR is only supported with MPEG-2 on the Profiler. MPEG-1 ISO Standard does not include VBR encoding even though some encoders on the market offer it as an extension of the MPEG-1 norm.

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
What MPEG standards does Profiler support? What about authoring these formats?

MPEGProfiler supports MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 including DVD and VideoCD 2.0 standards. MPEGProfiler includes DVD TOOLBOX, which supports DVD authoring, but VideoCD authoring requires a third party solution.

You can get ROXIO´s WinOnCD 6.0 "DVD Edition" from VITEC for only $300 if you buy an MPEGProfiler from VITEC also.

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
I need to remove the current driver for the MPEGProfiler and install another one. How can I make sure I have uninstalled everything regarding the MPEG Profiler card ?

You are right to be cautious.
Windows does a poor job when uninstalling software components on a PC.
VITEC engineers will be more than happy to help you. Send an email to VITEC technical support who will tell you where to look to make sure the process was completed correctly.

Is the MPEGProfiler compatible with the AMD K7 Athlon processor ?

Some AMD Athlon K7 systems and their chipsets are incompatible with our MPEGProfiler hardware. There are no known update at this time as this is a hardware compatibility problem.

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
The audio on my encoded video is slow and out of sync with the video. What is wrong?

Your system needs the most recent drivers and software. Download and install the latest version from the updates page then run the hardware tune-up utility.

If the source is a NTSC source , "Drop frame mode" must be checked in the "Advanced MPEG Properties" page to avoid a lip sync loss.

If you are using VCR bad tape, you must set the MPEGProfiler accordingly to this poor quality source by checking "VCR Syncro" in the "Video Source Selection" tab and by unchecking "Lock to VSync" in the "Audio Properties" tab. Usually this last option must be unchecked ONLY in case of worn video tapes and when the video synch are altered.
Audio capture will thus no longer be driven by video synch which is typically altered on bad sources. This will prevent possible audio gaps in the captured streams therefore avoiding major lipsynch loss.
If the video sync signal are low on these sources then this should solve this problem.

2003-11-18 | VTR Control + VLAN Express
I am looking into buying your VTR control solution. Does the VLAN comes with all the cables required ?

no.....each deck has its own cable, so you need to get the one corresponding to your player.
You can check the Videomedia website : www.videomedia.com
then click on "support" and finally on "cable reference" to find you which cable you need.

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
When using a Y/C input source, the video stops recording almost immediately, and no file is generated. What am I doing wrong?

Make sure that you have the video source input connected to the Y/C input of the Profiler board (located on the bracket of the card), and not to the Y/C output (located on the breakout cable).

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
I get a blue screen crash with a "PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA" error when selecting the Profiler from the DEVICES list. What is wrong?

Installation went fine without any error messages, but all of the buttons in Imager are "grayed out" except for DEVICES. What is wrong?

First, try clicking on the DEVICES icon, and selecting the Profiler driver from the list. Then click the check box. If this solves the problem, then the Profiler driver is simply not set as the default driver. To do this, choose USE DEFAULT DEVICE and SET DEFAULT DEVICE from the CONTROL MENU. This will prevent this issue in the future. If the other icons did not appear, then the problem is most likely one of three possible scenarios : -The hardware dongle is not attached to the parallel port -There is a driver or IRQ conflict -The board is not properly installed Follow the instructions in the previous Troubleshooting questions to solve these issues.

2003-11-18 | MPEG Profiler
When I launch a second copy of Imager MPEGProfiler while another copy is still running, my system crashes. Why?

The software is not designed to run multiple copies of itself simultaneously. In other words, do not do this.

2003-11-18 |
Why does the DCM require such a fast computer?

The DCM utilizes the computer system´s processing power in conjunction with it´s own processor to capture MPEG video. Thus, the faster the computer, the better the DCM can perform. Since VITEC´s hybrid compression architecture automatically uses as much of the available processing power of the PC as it can, the performance of the algorithm depends on the PC itself. Therefore the image quality is also a function of the PC power. In a traditional full hardware MPEG encoder, the quality doesn´t depend on the PC power. The figure below illustrates this behavior :

For each application (VCD 2.0 encoding, DVD-Video, SIF, HD1, FD1) there is a minimal and a recommended amount of processing power that should exist in your PC.

2003-11-18 |
My system only meets the minimum requirements, what kind of performance can I expect?

The minimum requirements will suffice for MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 half D1 quality. You can expect approximate SVHS quality or higher in half D1 resolution. Of course this depends greatly on the quality of the source footage as well.

2003-11-18 |
What operating systems are supported?

Currently, Windows 98 and Windows 98SE are supported for DCM owners with EEPROM version 1.0, 1.2 & 1.3.
Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Windows XP are supported only for DCM owners with EEPROM 1.4 and with the latest 3.2 driver.

2003-11-18 |
Does DCM support DVD, VideoCD, XVCD and Super VideoCD standards? What about authoring these formats?

Version 1.7 and 3.2 releases of DCM do support the MPEG format for VCD, XVCD, SVCD and DVD.
DCM inlcudes authoring software for Mini-DVD-Video only.

DCM-PLUS includes software for DVD, SVCD, XVCD and VCD authoring with WinOnCd 6.0 "Dvd Edition" from ROXIO.

2003-11-18 |
What is the quality of the MPEG encoded with the DCM?

This entirely depends on the quality of the source footage and the computer speed. For some generic samples of the optimal quality, check the SAMPLES section on the DOWNLOADS page.

2003-11-18 |
What audio formats does the DCM support?

The DCM supports MPEG-1 Layer 1 and 2, PCM and AC-3.

2003-11-18 |
Can the DCM decode MPEG-2 clips?

The DCM is a hardware encoder only. However, a software DVD player (working only under Win98 & Win Me) is provided with DCM, please see the Quickstart for more information.

2003-11-18 |

I do not have an EEPROM VM2-1.4, What happens if I install the new DCM driver 3.2 anyway ?

The DCM will not fucntion properly and you will loose all DCM support from VITEC Multimedia.

2003-11-18 |
How do I know which EEPROM version I have on my DCM Card ?

The EEPROM is a small 8 pin programable memory on which there is a white sticker starting with "VM2 V...." VITEC has released 4 versions of this EEPROM. Version 1.0, 1.2, 1.3 and 1.4

Only Version 1.4 can be upgraded to DCM driver 3.0 by software modification. Other previous versions will need an EEPROM hardware update.

2003-11-18 |
I would like to buy a DCM or DCM+ but I need to know on which Mother Board DCM and/or DCM+ work.

DCM and/or DCM+ work on all MotherBoards except those based on VIA KT 133 Chipset. This chipset is only mounted with Duron or Athlon CPUs. If you have such a motherboard, and already own a DCM or DCM+ card, you may or may not have any problems operating our product.

This incompatibility is totally independent from the DCM card and is solely the problem of the chipset manufacturer.

For some MotherBoard manufacturer, you may download a BIOS upgrade that may fix the problem. Please check Matsonic (www.matsonic.com) or Abit (www.abit.com.tw) web sites if your PC is equiped with such boards as they have a fix for this problem. For others, please check directly with the manufacturer.

2003-11-18 |
What type of computer and minimum requirements do you recommend for the DCM card ?

We recommend a Pentium IV 1.8GHz with Intel motherboard.
we do not recommend any entry level motherboards with basic chipsets.
Keep in mind that you are dealing with video, and that video requires a lot of resources !

2003-11-18 |
I need to install a new update for the DCM or I need to remove the current drivers. I don´t trust Windows in uninstalling everything. How can I make sure I have uninstalled everything regarding the DCM card on my computer?

You are right to be cautious.
Windows does a poor job when uninstalling software components on a PC.
VITEC engineers will be more than happy to help you. Send an email to VITEC technical support who will tell you where to look to make sure the process was completed correctly.

2003-11-18 |
All of the buttons in Imager are "grayed out" except for DEVICES. What is wrong?

Click on the DEVICES button and select the DCM. If this does not activate the other buttons, then the DCM driver is not loaded or there is a system conflict, or the DCM hardware card is not installed properly. Check to make sure that the card is properly installed and the driver is loaded. You can also try to change the card into another PCI slot. A setting in the BIOS may also solve this problem. Reboot your computer and enter the BIOS Setup utility. Try to find a line "PnP OS" or "Plug and Play OS". This line can be found in the "PNP/PCI configuration" section on some motherboards but also in the "boot" section on others. Set this "PnP OS" line on "No". Doing so, the resources used by the DCM will be assigned directly by the BIOS, according to the specific features of your motherboard.

2003-11-18 |
The preview window displays very choppy video, or the video freezes, when I am capturing video. Why?

The encoding process gives priority to capturing video over displaying the preview. This simply means that the DCM is using those resources for capturing. The slower the computer, the more this will happen. Although this is a normal event, optimizing your computer or upgrading the system will lessen this effect.

2003-11-18 |
The MPEG that is captured with the DCM has dropped frames and the audio is choppy. What is going on?

Your computer is unable to capture at the settings you have chosen. You can adjust your capture settings to lessen the computing power needed, optimize your system, or upgrade the system to meet the requirements.

2003-11-18 |
The MPEG-2 files that I capture will not play back through Media Player. What is wrong?

MPEG-2 files are not natively supported by most operating system media players. You must have a dedicated hardware or software MPEG-2 decoder to play these files. DCM comes with a software DVD player, please read the Quickstart for more information.

2003-11-18 |
I have an MPEG-2 decoder card, but it does not recognize the files captured from the DCM as compatible file types. What is wrong?

You must configure your media drivers to recognize the extensions of these file types. This is most easily done through editing your WIN.INI file to include the proper MPEG extension map. This is only valid with MCI drivers, not for Direct Show.
